What is LVT Flooring?

LVT (Luxury Vinyl Tile) flooring is an extremely durable, aesthetic and practical floor covering solution used in a wide range from residences to commercial areas, hotels to offices today. Also known as luxury vinyl tile, these floor coverings stand out with superior features that perfectly imitate the appearance of natural materials and respond to the needs of modern living spaces.

LVT Flooring Types

Click System LVT (Floating LVT)

Removable LVT type laid with interlocking system that requires no adhesive. Has locking mechanism similar to laminate flooring. Ideal for DIY projects, does not require professional installation. Plate sizes are usually around 1220x180 mm or 600x300 mm. Laying speed is very high, error margin is minimal. Tolerates small roughness on subfloor. Very popular in residential use.

Peel & Stick LVT

Practical LVT type with ready adhesive tape on bottom surface, can be peeled and stuck. Offers quick application in small areas. Preferred in sections like bathroom, kitchen. Cost is low but durability is less than adhesive systems. Can be used in temporary applications or rental spaces.

Click System PVC (LVT - Luxury Vinyl Tile)

PVC type installed with locking mechanism that interlocks with each other, similar to locking parquet system. Requires no adhesive, can be removed and reinstalled, and installation is quite easy. This system ideal for home users does not require professional installation.

Full Glue-Down LVT

Professional LVT type permanently fixed to floor with special vinyl adhesives. Provides highest stability and durability. Preferred in commercial areas, high traffic zones and underfloor heating systems. Thin profile products (2-3 mm) available, can be laid over existing floor. Requires professional installation. Removal difficulty is disadvantage.

SPC (Stone Plastic Composite) LVT

New generation LVT type consisting of stone powder and vinyl mixture, with extremely hard and rigid core structure. 100% waterproof, can be used in bathrooms and wet areas. Dimensional stability is excellent, does not expand-contract with temperature changes. Ideal for heavy traffic areas. Compatible with underfloor heating. Thickness between 4-6 mm. Price lower than WPC.

WPC (Wood Plastic Composite) LVT

LVT type consisting of wood powder, vinyl and foam material mixture, with soft and quiet core structure. Walking comfort is very high, effectively absorbs footstep sounds. Feels warmer and softer than SPC. Tolerant to slightly rough floors. Lightweight, easy to carry and install. Water resistance good but not as perfect as SPC. Preferred in premium segment products.

Tile Format LVT

LVT type produced in square or rectangular tile shape, usually in stone, marble or ceramic appearance. Sizes are standard tile dimensions like 300x300 mm, 450x450 mm, 600x600 mm. Preferred in bathrooms, kitchens and commercial areas. Special patterns can be created by combining different colored tiles. Joint appearance provides realistic stone/ceramic aesthetics.

Plank Format LVT

Popular LVT type produced in long rectangular plate shape, in wood parquet appearance. Sizes are usually parquet sizes like 1220x180 mm, 1500x230 mm. Wood grain patterns like oak, walnut, maple are perfectly imitated. Ideal for living rooms, bedrooms, offices. Special laying patterns like herringbone, chevron can be done.

LVT Flooring Advantages

Realistic Natural Material Appearance

LVT flooring perfectly imitates wood, stone and marble with advanced digital printing and embossing technologies. Each plate/tile carries different pattern, repeating images are minimal. Provides tactile realism thanks to 3D texture and pattern synchronization (EIR technology). Wood grains, stone cracks, marble veins are available visually and tangibly. Offers aesthetic value of natural materials without maintenance and cost problems.

Superior Water and Moisture Resistance

LVT flooring is 100% waterproof thanks to its vinyl-based structure. Can be safely used in humid areas like bathroom, kitchen, laundry room and basement. Does not swell, deteriorate or mold like wood parquet. Not damaged in case of water leakage or overflow. This feature provides great advantage for families and pet owners. Can be cleaned regularly with water.

Easy and Quick Installation

Click system LVT can be easily laid without any professional knowledge. No need for adhesive, nails or special tools. A room laying can be completed within few hours. Cutting operations done simply with utility knife or saw. Error margin low, incorrectly laid pieces can be removed and repositioned. Can be laid over existing floor (tile, laminate, concrete), no removal needed. Perfect choice for DIY projects.

High Durability and Long Life

Quality LVT products can be used trouble-free for 15-25 years. Resistant to heavy foot traffic depending on wear layer thickness. AC4 and AC5 class products suitable for commercial use. Resistant to scratches, stains and impacts. Resistant to pet scratches. No color fading, maintains vibrancy for many years. Warranty periods vary between 10-20 years.

Easy Maintenance and Cleaning

LVT flooring is extremely easy to clean. Daily vacuuming and weekly damp mopping sufficient. No need for special cleaning products or polishing. Does not hold dirt, bacteria and germs thanks to non-porous surface. Provides hygienic floor. Does not stain, spilled liquids easily wiped. Cleaning much more practical compared to wood parquet or carpet. Ideal for allergic people, does not hold dust and mites.

Sound and Heat Insulation

Effectively absorbs footstep sounds thanks to foam or cork layer in base layer. Minimizes noise going to downstairs neighbor in apartment buildings. Provides acoustic comfort. Does not feel cold like ceramic thanks to heat insulation feature. Warm and comfortable underfoot. WPC core products especially quiet and warm. Compatible with underfloor heating systems.

Wide Design Options

Hundreds of different wood types, stone textures and marble patterns available. Classic oak, modern gray tones, rustic wood, marble, concrete, industrial metal appearances available. Matte, semi-matte, glossy surface options available. Different plate/tile sizes and colors can be combined. Design suitable for every decoration style available. Trend colors and patterns constantly updated.

Cost Effectiveness

LVT flooring is much more economical than wood parquet, natural stone or ceramic. Both material and installation cost low. Labor cost zero in click systems (DIY). Total cost of ownership very low due to long life and low maintenance cost. Does not require repair or replacement for years. Price/performance ratio excellent.

Non-Slip Surface

Base layer that absorbs floor roughness and facilitates product grip.

Environmentally Friendly Options

Modern LVT products contain recyclable vinyl. Phthalate-free formulations available. Low VOC emission, environment and health certified products can be preferred. Certificates like FloorScore, GreenGuard Gold guarantee indoor air quality. Provides wood aesthetics without cutting natural forests. Sustainable production technologies being developed.

Structural Features

LVT floor coverings typically consist of 3-7 layers and total thickness varies between 2-8 mm:

UV Coating Layer

Top thin protective film, provides protection against UV rays and prevents color fading. Increases stain and chemical resistance.

Wear Layer

This layer made of transparent PVC or polyurethane determines floor durability. Thickness varies between 0.3 mm and 0.7 mm. As thickness increases, commercial use class rises. Wear classes like AC3, AC4, AC5 determined according to this layer.

Design Layer

This layer providing product dimensional stability prevents floor shape distortions and increases durability.

Fiberglass Layer

Reinforcement layer providing dimensional stability, minimizing expansion and contraction. Prevents shape distortions in heat and moisture changes.

Vinyl Carrier Layer (Core Layer)

Dense PVC layer forming main body of product. In rigid LVT (SPC/WPC) this layer consists of composite material. Provides flexibility and strength.

Base Reinforcement Layer

Stabilization layer based on fiberglass or cellulose, maintains product flatness.

Base Layer (Backing/Underlay)

Foam or cork based base layer providing sound insulation, increasing walking comfort and tolerating small roughness on floor. Some premium products have integrated underlay.

LVT Flooring Installation

Floor Preparation

Before LVT laying, floor should be flat, dry, clean and solid. Roughness on concrete floors should be corrected with gypsum screed. Can be laid over old ceramic, tile or laminate but floor should be flat. Should not exceed 3 mm difference when checked with 3 meter straightedge. Floor moisture should be below 4%. Loose or damaged old coverings should be removed. Use of special underlayment for click system LVT is optional. Some products have integrated underlay. Application of moisture barrier (PE film) over concrete floor recommended.

Click System LVT Installation

Plates/tiles should be kept at room temperature (18-24°C) for at least 48 hours before installation. Laying direction determined, usually laying parallel to light preferred. First row should start parallel and straight to wall. 5-10 mm expansion gap left to wall edges (spacers used).

Plates approached to each other at 20-30 degree angle and locking mechanism activated. "Click" sound heard, connection completed. Each row laid offset by at least 30 cm (brick bond pattern). Door frames, pipe passages easily cut with utility knife. Last row cut lengthwise if necessary. Baseboards or transition profiles installed.

Glue-Down LVT Installation

Special vinyl adhesives (acrylic or rubber based) used. Adhesive spread on floor with notched trowel (A1 or A2 notch size). After open waiting time (5-15 minutes) LVT laid. Plates/tiles pressed firmly, air bubbles removed. Rolled with 50-100 kg roller. Joint gaps kept minimum (tight fit). Traffic ban applied for first 24 hours. Ready for full use after 48 hours.

Special Laying Patterns

  • Brick Bond Pattern: Most common laying shape, each row offset by half plate. Provides classic parquet aesthetics in wood appearance planks.
  • Chevron: Plates cut at 45 degree angle and laid in V shape. Provides luxury and dynamic appearance.
  • Herringbone: Plates interlocked at right angles to each other. Offers classic and elegant aesthetics.
  • Ashlar Pattern: Different sized tiles placed randomly. Provides natural stone appearance.
  • Checkerboard: Two color tiles laid alternately. For retro and bold design.

Maintenance and Cleaning

Regular maintenance important for long life of LVT flooring:

Daily Maintenance

  • Sweeping with soft broom or microfiber mop
  • Use of vacuum cleaner (with brush head)
  • Removal of sand and dust particles (prevents scratches)

Weekly Cleaning

  • Wiping with damp mop
  • Use of pH neutral LVT cleaning product
  • Stains should be cleaned immediately

Monthly Deep Cleaning

  • General cleaning with LVT special cleaner

  • Cleaning between joints

⚠️ What Not to Use

  • Abrasive cleaning tools (steel wool, metal brush)
  • Solvent based chemicals (thinner, acetone, ammonia)
  • Steam machine (may weaken adhesive bond in glued products)
  • Excessive water use (should not form puddles)
  • Do not polish, requires no surface treatment

LVT Flooring Comparison with Other Floor Coverings

LVT vs Laminate Flooring

LVT is 100% waterproof, laminate swells and deteriorates when contacted with water. LVT is quieter and softer, laminate is hard and noisy. LVT offers more realistic wood/stone appearance. Laminate is more economical. Both easy to install. LVT more compatible with underfloor heating. Durability similar but LVT superior in humid areas.

LVT vs Wood Parquet

Wood parquet is natural, prestigious and high value but very expensive (400-2000 TL/m²). LVT perfectly imitates wood and very economical. Wood deteriorates with water and moisture, LVT resistant. Wood requires regular polishing and maintenance, LVT does not. Wood scratches and can stain, LVT more resistant. Wood feels warm and natural, LVT captures this feeling. Wood can be renewed with repolishing, LVT cannot be renewed.

LVT vs Ceramic/Tile

Ceramic very durable and ideal in wet areas. LVT warmer and more comfortable, ceramic feels cold. LVT installation very easy and fast, ceramic requires professional laying. Ceramic can break, LVT flexible and unbreakable. LVT quiet, ceramic reflects footstep sound. Cost similar (mid segment). Ceramic more durable long term (30+ years).

LVT vs PVC Roll

Both are vinyl based. LVT modular and removable, PVC roll permanent. LVT much more aesthetic and offers realistic patterns, PVC simple appearance. LVT installation easy, PVC roll requires professional. LVT damaged section replaceable, PVC requires complete renewal. LVT more expensive. PVC ideal for hospitals and industrial areas, LVT ideal for residences and offices.
