What is Floor Polishing?

Floor polish (floor polish, floor wax, floor finish) is a liquid or semi-liquid coating material applied to various floor surfaces for protective, polishing and aesthetic purposes. It is a floor maintenance product that extends the life of natural stone, marble, granite, ceramic, concrete and wood floors, gives them a shiny appearance and facilitates daily maintenance. Widely used in homes, offices, hospitals, hotels and commercial areas.

Floor Polish Types

Water-Based Acrylic Polish

The most commonly used modern polish type containing water-based polymer (acrylic, vinyl acrylic). Low VOC, odorless, environmentally friendly. Fast drying (30-60 minutes), easy application. Glossy or matte finishing options. Ideal for commercial areas such as offices, schools, hospitals, shopping malls. Durability increased with metal-cross technology. Renewal possible with stripping process.

Solvent-Based Polish

Traditional polish type containing organic solvent (white spirit, mineral spirit). High durability, excellent water resistance. Strong odor, high VOC. Long drying time (2-4 hours). Outdoor areas, wet areas, high traffic areas. Industrial facilities, garages, warehouses. Limited use for environmental and health reasons.

Natural Beeswax Polish (Wax Polish)

Organic polish based on natural beeswax, carnauba wax. Ideal for wood, natural stone, antique floors. Natural, ecological, breathable. Low durability, requires frequent renewal. High maintenance cost. Historical buildings, luxury residences, museums. Warm, matte and natural appearance.

Polyurethane-Based Polish

Extremely durable, chemically resistant polish containing polyurethane resin. Glass-like shiny surface. Wood parquet, epoxy floors, concrete polishing. Requires professional application. Difficult stripping, usually removed by sanding.

Matte (Satin) Polish

Polish type providing low gloss level, natural appearance. Gloss level between 20-40%. Modern minimalist spaces, offices. Preferred where gloss is not desired. Stains and marks less noticeable.

Polish Application Process

1. Floor Preparation

Cleaning Critical: Floor must be completely clean, dry and oil-free. Dust, dirt, detergent residue impairs polish adhesion. Professional floor cleaning machine or decontaminator is used. Final rinse is done with pH neutral water.

2. Polish Selection and Preparation

Polish is selected according to floor type, traffic intensity, budget. Product instructions are read. Polish is mixed well (sediment may occur). If dilution is required, manufacturer ratio is followed. Room temperature should be 15-25°C, humidity 50-70%.

3. First Coat Application

Tools: Mop (flat pad), microfiber applicator, roller or spray (depending on product). Automatic polishing machine in professional applications.

4. Drying and Intermediate Coats

First Coat Drying: 30-60 minutes (water-based), 2-4 hours (solvent-based). Complete drying is waited, otherwise intermediate coat won't adhere.

5. Final Drying and Opening to Use

Walking Traffic: Water-based 2-4 hours, solvent-based 6-8 hours later.

Advantages of Floor Polishing

  • Protection: Protects against wear, scratches, stains, chemical damage. Extends floor life.
  • Aesthetic: Shiny, clean and professional appearance. Revives floor's natural color.
  • Hygiene: Seals pores, reduces dirt and bacteria retention. Cleaning becomes easier.
  • Economic: Regular polishing preserves floor value, delays expensive repair and replacement needs.
  • Non-slip: Matte or semi-gloss polishes prevent slipping. Safety increases (especially in commercial areas).

Layered Structure

Floor polish is a polymer-based maintenance product that creates a thin film layer on the floor surface, providing protection and shine. Basic functions: protecting surface against wear, resistance to scratches and stains, shiny and clean appearance, sealing floor pores, facilitating daily cleaning, reviving and protecting floor's natural color.
